Chapter Fifty-Two

Black Nova, Cell Block Nine Gamma

“Jim, do you know where we are?” Byrne asked once the door to their cell slid shut. The crew of Oxbow was in a single room, roughly ten feet square, with no windows. The walls were a featureless, deep gray color. Above their heads, the ceiling was one continuous light source, casting a harsh white light that created no shadows.

“I saw Darajoren symbols in the corridor. My guess is our captors brought us to T’Stom’s ship.”

“If it wasn’t for the fact we are incarcerated in this cell, I would say that is a stroke of good fortune,” Byrne replied. “As it is, I cannot imagine a more difficult situation from which to complete what we set out to do.”

“At least they didn’t capture Jillnap or Wobong,” said Jackson. “There is still hope.”

With no furniture in the cell, each of the crew sat on the cold metal floor and leaned against a wall.

“What do you think they will do with us?” Megan asked.

Byrne shrugged. “I know what I would do. They regard us as potential sources of valuable information. But they know very little about humans. Even less about why they found Oxbow in interstellar space. We are a mystery and therefore a risk. They will want quick answers to ensure they understand the risk.”

“Why did they take Georgia away? Do you think they recognized her?”

“Without doubt, Megan,” Grant said. “Georgia is well-known among the military elite. If she and Jillnap are being hunted, her image will have been shared.”

“Like wanted posters in your Wild West,” said Anna.

“Something like that,” Grant said with a grimace. “If this is T’Stom’s ship, he will be desperate to find out how much she knows.”

Jackson shuddered. “Is there nothing we can do? I can’t leave her to face that danger on her own.” He did not want to imagine what was currently happening to her. Although she was a strong-willed individual, that trait could actually be her downfall if she tried to resist T’Stom’s interrogation techniques. How much of her would be left once T’Stom finished with her?

Molloy pointed to the door. “You saw how thick that thing is. I don’t think we can get past it with just our bare hands. And then there will be the guards outside.”

“I know. But it feels wrong leaving Georgia to face T’Stom alone.”

Wotor sat quietly in a corner, her legs crossed, and eyes closed as she listened to the conversation. The way the humans wanted to protect their friend fascinated her. Jillnap was always dismissing the species as primitive savages with brutal tendencies. She had seen none of those qualities in Georgia and, having spent more time with other humans, she now regarded Jillnap’s opinion as incorrect.

She wanted to tell them that Georgia would survive the interrogation. Wotor knew that because of her PTF. However, she also knew Georgia would die sometime soon in the middle of a battle and that was information she did not want to share.

“I do have an idea,” said Grant.
